In an interview with Ukrinform, Valentyn Badrak, the head of the Center for Army Research, Conversion and Disarmament, stated that Ukrainian drone capabilities, particularly in ground robotic systems, have established a significant advantage in the ongoing conflict. He emphasized that this advancement plays a vital role in preserving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers while simultaneously increasing casualties among Russian forces.

Key Details

Badrak provided several insights regarding the advancements in Ukraine's drone capabilities. He noted that while Russia operates approximately 20 types of robotic complexes, Ukraine boasts over 250 manufacturers of ground robotic systems.

In terms of contracts, Ukraine has seen a substantial increase in the procurement of such systems, with 25,000 units contracted in the first half of 2026 compared to 15,000 in the entire previous year. Additionally, Badrak discussed the potential of medium-range drones to disrupt enemy logistics, indicating that this capability could pave the way for the liberation of occupied territories.

Although there are strides in drone technology, Badrak highlighted existing challenges in the state sector regarding missile production. He pointed out that Ukraine possesses a state ballistic missile but acknowledged that it still has significant shortcomings.

He urged for quicker governmental support for private missile manufacturers, of whom there are currently eight. Badrak asserted that without an effective ballistic missile program, Ukraine's defense industry would struggle to match Russia's formidable military capabilities.

He noted that while drones with explosive payloads of 50 kg have their place, they cannot replace the strategic impact of missiles with 350-450 kg warheads.

Why It Matters

The dominance of drone forces on the battlefield represents a shift in tactical approaches, allowing Ukraine to better safeguard its troops while exerting pressure on Russian forces. The growth of Ukraine's military technology sector is vital in countering a larger adversary like Russia, emphasizing the need for continued investments and support in military innovations.

Background

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has escalated since 2014, particularly after Russia's annexation of Crimea and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. The use of drones and robotic systems has become pivotal in modern warfare, and Ukraine has been actively seeking to enhance its capabilities to counter Russian aggression.

The integration of advanced technologies, including drones, artificial intelligence, and electronic warfare, has become essential for Ukraine's defense strategy, particularly given Russia's extensive industrial and military infrastructure. As the conflict continues, the ability to maintain a technological edge through innovations and procurements will be crucial for Ukraine's efforts in reclaiming its territories.
