Ukraine Faces Increased Drone and Missile Attacks from Russia

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian forces unleashed an unprecedented wave of attacks on Ukraine last week. In total, nearly 1750 strike drones, 1530 guided aviation bombs, and 39 missiles were employed against Ukrainian targets. Zelensky shared these figures in a Facebook post, emphasizing the scale of the assaults. 'The enemy attacked our country thousands of times,' he stated, underscoring the challenges faced by Ukrainian defense forces in countering these assaults. The attacks primarily targeted civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities and residential buildings. Despite the heavy bombardment, Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 98 out of 117 drones used in the attacks on March 7 alone. Nevertheless, the sheer volume of incoming threats prompted Zelensky to call for enhanced aerial defense measures to protect Ukraine's skies. Zelensky further insisted on the necessity for more reliable and sophisticated air defense systems, citing the critical importance of ongoing international support through the PURL program. He acknowledged contributions from partner nations and reiterated the need for consistent supplies of military equipment, particularly advanced surface-to-air missiles, to bolster national defense capabilities. In his remarks, Zelensky also highlighted the importance of imposing stricter sanctions on Russia and its allies. This includes blocking any financial support that enables Russia to continue its military operations against Ukraine. He indicated that discussions with European partners regarding these critical security measures are underway. The ongoing conflict has placed immense strain on Ukraine’s resources and civilian population.
