According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian strike involved over 550 drones during daylight hours alone, with a total of nearly 1,000 strike drones used in a 24-hour period. These included various types, notably the Shahed and Gerber drones.
The Ukrainian military press service confirmed this information through a report on Telegram, emphasizing the scale and intensity of the attack. The aerial offensive was largely focused on the northern regions of Ukraine, particularly the Chernihiv and Sumy regions.
However, the daytime strike expanded its reach, impacting Poltava, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, and western areas all the way to Lviv. Between 09:00 and 18:00 on March 24, preliminary figures showed that 556 drones were launched, with 541 intercepted or neutralized by Ukrainian air defense systems.
Despite significant defense efforts, the assault did result in confirmed casualties. Explosions were reported in several cities, including Lviv, Vinnytsia, and Ternopil, with Lviv experiencing injuries to 17 individuals.
The Vinnytsia region also saw fatalities, with one confirmed death and 11 injuries from a UAV strike. The scale of this attack has raised concerns both for the immediate safety of civilians and for the broader implications for Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
The significant number of drones indicates a continued commitment by Russian forces to apply drone warfare as a tactic against Ukraine. As the Ukrainian military addresses these assaults, the effectiveness of their air defense systems will be crucial in mitigating future attacks of this magnitude.
This incident underscores the ongoing volatility of the conflict and the constant threat posed by drone warfare. Ukrainian authorities are working to bolster their defenses as they face increasing aerial threats.
The psychological impact on civilians, alongside the strategic challenges posed to military operations, is significant and needs careful management in the coming days.
