Since the evening of March 8, Ukraine has faced a concerted aerial assault by Russian forces, which included two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and a significant number of drones. The launch included 197 strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) identified as Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, coming from various regions, notably occupied Crimea and several locations within Russia.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that by 08:00 on March 9, roughly 161 enemy drones had been destroyed by a combination of aerial defense strategies. These included the rapid response of aviation units, anti-aircraft missile troops, and electronic warfare capabilities, which all played crucial roles in mitigating the attack's impact.
During the initial stages of the assault, air raid alerts were triggered in multiple Ukrainian regions, reflecting the threats posed by Russia's missile and drone capabilities. The drones targeted areas to the north, south, and east of the country, with reports confirming damage and debris from downed UAVs observed at various locations.
Approximately 120 of the aggressor drones were of the Shahed type, which has been frequently deployed in previous attacks. The coordinated effort from Ukraine’s Defense Forces demonstrates a robust defense mechanism against ongoing aerial threats.
Despite the significant number of drones intercepted, authorities noted that several UAVs remained in Ukrainian airspace, indicating that the threat was not fully neutralized. The commander of the Air Force underscored the need for continuous vigilance as enemy attacks may persist.
In the aftermath of these events, the focus remains on bolstering air defenses and preparing for further potential escalations. Understanding the dynamics of aerial warfare in this context is essential for assessing ongoing military strategies and national security concerns in Ukraine.
