The statement points to continued Russian efforts to preserve a presence on the islands despite regular Ukrainian pressure. Even limited troop movement in this area matters because the islands sit near routes used for monitoring river traffic, launching small-boat activity, and supporting wider operations around the lower Dnipro.

Vessel Movements Also Noted

Voloshyn said Russian forces were also relocating vessels in the Zaliznyi Port area. That suggests the rotation was not an isolated staffing change, but part of a broader effort to maintain readiness and reposition assets under contested conditions.

In southern Ukraine, small craft and island positions can have outsized tactical value. They support reconnaissance, supply movement, and attempts to keep footholds near waterways that are difficult to control by conventional ground forces alone.

The spokesperson said Ukrainian defenders destroyed two Russian boats over the previous day and have been targeting enemy vessels in the area on a regular basis. Those strikes are intended to complicate Russian logistics and reduce the usefulness of positions held on or near the islands.
