Zelensky expressed concern over the lack of progress in the EU's actions regarding sanctions against Russia, stating that no advancements have been made on the proposed measures since the war's escalation. He emphasized the urgency of financial support for Ukraine, noting that the delay in approving the €90 billion package poses a critical challenge for the country’s recovery efforts. In a recent address, Zelensky coordinated discussions on these matters with French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting the collaborative effort required among EU leaders to resolve the issue. "The next week will be dedicated to ensuring that the necessary decisions for Ukraine’s defense come to fruition," Zelensky stated. He also acknowledged the contributions of nations that support Ukraine's air defense procurement program, particularly in acquiring American-made PATRIOT missile systems. This support is vital as Ukraine faces increasing threats amid the ongoing conflict. Zelensky raised alarms over the ongoing military collaboration between Russia and Iran, pointing to intelligence reports that suggest Russian aid to the Iranian regime enhances strikes against American forces in the Middle East. He indicated that both regimes, tied together in mutual support, pose a significant threat on multiple fronts, including Europe and the Middle East. Recognizing these interconnected threats, Zelensky reiterated the need for European assistance to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against aerial attacks, particularly from Iranian drones like the Shahed. Additionally, a backdrop of political maneuvering is present, with Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán threatening to block the new sanctions package until the transit of oil via the Druzhba pipeline is restored. This highlights the geopolitical complexities affecting EU decision-making amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.
