Leaders of the European Union will convene in Brussels on March 19 to discuss a range of topics, including the competitiveness of the EU market, support for Ukraine, and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The meeting marks a key opportunity for President Zelensky to directly engage with EU leaders regarding Ukraine’s needs and the broader geopolitical landscape.

Marilena Rauna, Cyprus's Deputy Minister for European Affairs, announced this during a session of the European Parliament on March 11, 2026. The upcoming European Council meeting is anticipated to open with discussions led by the President of the European Parliament, after which Zelensky will share his insights and updates on the situation in Ukraine.
Rauna indicated that this spring session will heavily focus on economic issues, particularly in light of the rapidly evolving geopolitical circumstances. The leaders will also delve into aspects related to enhancing the single market and reviewing the long-term financial framework of the EU.
Within the current geopolitical context, it is crucial for the EU to reaffirm its steadfast support for Ukraine, which remains a top priority on the agenda. Rauna emphasized that EU leaders will exchange thoughts with Zelensky, aiming to ensure sustained backing for Ukraine at all levels.
The dialogue will also explore how the EU can maintain its commitment amid interconnected regional crises. Rauna brought attention to the supply of Iranian-made Shahed drones to Russia, which have been utilized extensively in attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
Ukraine has garnered significant experience in countering such assaults over the years, and Rauna mentioned that Kyiv has offered to share this expertise. This sharing of knowledge underscores the increasingly intertwined security challenges faced by both regions.
As the EU addresses multiple crises, including those stemming from Iran’s military support to Russia, the call for unity, principled action, and ongoing engagement from the European Union is paramount. The EU's position on maintaining price caps on Russian oil, as highlighted by European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, reinforces its resolve despite disruptions in international supply chains due to the conflict in the Middle East.
Such discussions will be crucial for shaping a coordinated EU response during challenging times.
