During a recent press briefing, President Zelensky presented new intelligence data indicating that Russia is shifting its military strategy. Reportedly, Moscow plans to produce up to seven million first-person view (FPV) drones this year, a move that marks a notable pivot in its approach to aerial warfare.
Zelensky emphasized the implications of this change, stating that while missiles can be intercepted by air defenses, drones remain more challenging to combat. In his remarks, he noted that even if a substantial number of drones are shot down, a significant portion could still reach their intended targets.
This tactic, he suggested, reflects a strategic reliance on drone terror by Russian forces. Zelensky elaborated on the various types of drones being produced by Russia, including FPV drones, fiber-optic drones, alongside long-range varieties.
He pointed out that Ukraine also has plans to produce seven million FPVs, indicating that both nations are now competing in drone capabilities. He stated, "Their order is seven million FPV drones.
We also have seven million planned. The number of FPVs we have is actually the same." In response to these developments, Ukraine's Defense Ministry introduced a new procurement strategy for drones.
Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov outlined that this fresh approach will base demand on confirmed battlefield requirements. This system is designed to minimize human errors and potential corruption by allowing the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to issue requests that focus solely on technical specifications without naming specific drone models or manufacturers.
Under the new procurement system, the selection of drones destined for frontline units will be guided by their performance metrics derived from battlefield data. This strategy involves using digital platforms such as a bonus-based electronic points system, DOT-Chain, Brave1 Market, DELTA, and Mission Control to evaluate which drones are most effective in combat.
The focus on drones underscores a growing emphasis on technological warfare in the ongoing conflict. Zelensky's statements reflect the urgency with which Ukraine is addressing the evolving nature of military engagements and the need to adapt rapidly in response to Russian tactics.
As both countries ramp up their drone production capabilities, the landscape of aerial warfare continues to transform dramatically.
