During a joint press briefing with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid, President Zelensky emphasized the sustained intensity of Russian attacks on Ukraine. He indicated that the situation remains dire, with drone and missile assaults occurring daily, primarily targeting the energy sector and urban areas.
Zelensky underscored a troubling trend: the increasing reliance of Russia on ballistic missiles in these strikes. He reported that the frequency of these attacks has risen, with dozens of ballistic missiles launched every month alongside a considerable number of cruise missiles and destructive drones.
Zelensky highlighted the need for an enhanced air defense system, calling it essential for protecting Ukrainian skies amidst this uptick in Russian military activity. His remarks came during an important discussion about military cooperation between Ukraine and Spain, where he acknowledged significant Spanish support for Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
The President expressed gratitude for Spain’s commitment to supplying necessary missile systems and other advanced military technologies to bolster Ukraine's defense forces. Furthermore, Zelensky revealed that new defense agreements signed today with Spain aim to strengthen collaboration in missile and air defense sectors.
He pointed out the ongoing partnership with Spanish companies to promote defense technological advancement for both nations, emphasizing the shared experience gained throughout the conflict with Russia. This collaboration reflects a broader commitment to not only defense but also humanitarian and economic cooperation between Ukraine and Spain.
The situation is critical, as these attacks on infrastructure exacerbate the ongoing humanitarian crisis within Ukraine. As Russian strikes become more frequent and destructive, the need for robust defense mechanisms grows, making international partnerships more vital than ever to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
