During an evening address, President Zelensky articulated the significant role of the late Honorary Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine, Filaret, in shaping Ukraine’s spiritual landscape and the establishment of an autocephalous Orthodox Church. Zelensky emphasized Filaret's impact as a historic figure who fundamentally altered the spiritual trajectory of Ukraine.
The ceremony took place at St. Michael's Cathedral, where a large gathering of clergy and citizens mourned the loss of the 97-year-old patriarch.
Zelensky, alongside his wife Olena, attended the somber event, expressing deep gratitude for Filaret’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s spiritual independence. "We remember.
We honor his contribution to Ukraine’s spiritual independence and to the creation of an autocephalous church," he remarked, highlighting Filaret's enduring legacy. Filaret, who was born Mykhailo Antonovych Denysenko, led the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate) for several decades and was instrumental in its quest for autocephaly from the Moscow Patriarchate.
His efforts culminated in the recognition of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 2018, a pivotal moment in Ukraine's religious history. The funeral service and burial are scheduled for Sunday, March 22.
As the nation reflects on Filaret's contributions, many see this moment as a critical juncture for the future of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. The farewell has attracted figures from various walks of life, underlining the widespread respect and admiration for his role in the nation's religious and cultural identity.
Zelensky's acknowledgment serves not only as a tribute but also as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and commitments that accompany Ukraine's spiritual independence. The national dialogue surrounding church autonomy remains essential as Ukraine continues to navigate its post-Soviet identity and conflicts with external influences, particularly from Russia.
The legacy of Patriarch Filaret stands as a testament to the enduring quest for national sovereignty in all forms, including spiritual independence. His work continues to resonate within the broader narrative of Ukraine’s pursuit of autonomy and dignity on the global stage.
