UNDP Aids in Clearing Over One Million Tons of Rubble in Ukraine

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has provided significant support for the removal of rubble exceeding one million tons across various regions in Ukraine. This initiative was announced by Ivana Zhivkovich, the director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia, during an interview with Ukrinform.

She highlighted that debris clearance has emerged as a central issue in Ukraine's recovery efforts amid ongoing challenges from the war.

Zhivkovich pointed out that since 2022, UNDP's operations have been pivotal in allowing communities to regain access to public spaces and begin the rebuilding of thousands of damaged facilities. She stated, "Clearing debris has become one of the main challenges of recovery in Ukraine, and the UNDP is undertaking one of its largest global operations in this area." Furthermore, Zhivkovich noted that the UNDP has introduced the first protocol in Ukraine for the safe handling of hazardous materials.

This includes support for the adoption of new state sanitary regulations, which are essential for safe reconstruction practices. The UNDP is also working to launch the country's first laboratory for testing asbestos, a known hazardous material.

In conjunction with the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development, the UNDP finalized a cooperation roadmap for 2026 aimed at systematically restoring territories and enhancing local self-government capabilities.
