What Happened
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police arrested a 17-year-old professional college student in the Kharkiv region. He was allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence to assist in coordinating enemy fire in the Izyum sector.
Key Details
Investigations revealed that the teenager’s primary targets included command posts and fortified positions of Ukrainian defense forces. Russian agents contacted him after he sought on Telegram to hire someone to harm his stepfather amid a personal conflict.
In one of the chats, he received an offer from Russia promising to eliminate his relative in exchange for information. To carry out the hostile task, the boy pretended to be on work trips related to road repair for a municipal enterprise.
While conducting reconnaissance, he marked locations of active Ukrainian military personnel and equipment on Google Maps. He also gathered electronic geolocations of sites that he believed could serve as logistical bases for Ukrainian defenders.
SBU personnel documented the spy's activities and detained him in his student dormitory room. Following searches, agents seized his smartphone, which contained photographs and coordinates of potential targets intended for Russian forces.
The SBU charged the teenager under Article 111, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code for treason during wartime. He is currently in custody without the possibility of bail. Given his age, he faces a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
Previous reports indicated that the SBU also apprehended a 16-year-old schoolboy in Kharkiv who coordinated Russian air strikes in the Chuhuiv and Lozova districts.

The detention of the 17-year-old highlights ongoing concerns regarding the recruitment of young individuals for espionage during the conflict. The incident illustrates the complexities of personal motivations intertwined with geopolitical factors.
