Ukrainian PEN Delivers Books to Antarctic Researchers

On March 13, 2026, Ukrainian PEN delivered a collection of modern Ukrainian literature to the Vernadsky Station, the only Ukrainian polar station in Antarctica. The initiative marks the beginning of a partnership with the National Antarctic Scientific Center (NANC).

According to information from Ukrainian PEN, the book donation aims to bridge a cultural connection between Ukraine and Antarctica. Anna Shevchenko, the coordinator of the book projects at Ukrainian PEN, emphasized the significance of this gesture, noting that such contributions enhance the literary environment for the station's staff.

This delivery is not the first of its kind. Ukrainian PEN previously donated books in 2021, but this time it occurs under a formal partnership with NANC.

The collection includes works by notable Ukrainian authors and recent nominees for the Yuri Shevelev Prize 2025. Titles donated include "Hemingway Knows Nothing" by Artur Dron, "The Game of Dressing" by Artem Chekh, and several others focusing on contemporary Ukrainian identity and experience.

The importance of reading in the daily lives of the station's team cannot be understated. The library serves as both a leisure space and a cultural hub, crucial for maintaining morale during extended periods in isolation.

The latest donation adds to the station's resources and supports the reading habits of the polar researchers, ensuring that they have access to quality literature. Alongside this donation, creative contributions from authors like Artem Chekh, Artur Dron, and Gleb Bityukov featured personal messages for the station's team, further enriching the significance of the gift.
