What Happened

On April 11, 2023, during a proclaimed ceasefire by Russia, an evacuation group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) was attacked by Russian forces near Huliaipole in the Zaporizhzhia region. According to a report from DeepState, the attack utilized FPV (First Person View) drones. Casualties have been reported among the Ukrainian evacuation team.

Key Details

The incident occurred around 5:30 PM local time. DeepState reported that despite the ceasefire, Russian troops continued operations against Ukrainian forces, resulting in fatalities among the evacuated individuals.

A video shared by the project showed the drone strike targeting injured personnel. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had previously announced that approximately 469 violations of the ceasefire were recorded after 4 PM on April 11.

Earlier in the day, Russian state media reported the beginning of a "Easter truce" intended to last until the end of April 12. The General Staff indicated that Ukrainian defense forces would maintain a ceasefire on land, sea, and air during the Easter celebrations, but would respond based on enemy actions.

In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not mention any violations of the ceasefire by Russian forces. Instead, he stated that Ukraine had proposed to Russia an extension of the ceasefire following the Easter holiday.

Why It Matters

This event illustrates the ongoing volatility in the region, even amid declared ceasefires. The attack raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of ceasefires in protecting civilian and military operations. Furthermore, the failure to adhere to ceasefire agreements hampers humanitarian efforts, especially during significant religious observances like Easter.

Background

The so-called "Easter truce" was announced by Russian authorities and was meant to create a temporary halt to hostilities. However, previous patterns indicate that such declarations often do not lead to a genuine reduction in violence.

The continued attacks and violations shown in this latest incident are reflective of the broader hostilities that have persisted since the beginning of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
