What Happened

On May 26, 2026, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) released two commemorative coins as part of the series titled "We Are Strong. We Are Together." These coins honor the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. The NBU emphasized that this coin series is a testament to Ukrainian unity and resilience.

Key Details

According to the NBU, the release aims to recognize the residents of the border regions who have shown remarkable strength since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Head of NBU Andriy Pyshny spoke about the significance of these coins, highlighting that they reflect gratitude towards the communities that have defended their territories and maintained faith in Ukraine despite the challenges faced.

Each coin features a nominal value of 10 hryvnias. The obverse side of both coins matches the design of a previously issued 10 hryvnia coin from 2018, showcasing the state emblem of Ukraine and the year of minting within an ornamental frame.

The reverse side includes a stylized map of Ukraine with clearly marked administrative borders, specifically highlighting the regions they commemorate. The design of the reverse side was created by artist Oleksandra Kuchynska, while the obverse was designed by Volodymyr Demyanenko.

Both coins will circulate legally in Ukraine and can be used without restrictions for all types of payments.

Why It Matters

The introduction of these coins emphasizes the acknowledgment of regional resilience in the face of hardship. As communities continue to withstand adversity, these coins serve as a physical representation of their determination and unity.

Background

The NBU's new release follows a series of commemorative coins aimed at celebrating significant aspects of Ukrainian culture and history. Previously, other coins were issued to mark events and figures pivotal to Ukraine's past, including the commemorative coin dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the memory of Symon Petliura.

Additionally, a total of two million coins for each of the new collections will gradually enter circulation. Part of the production will consist of specially packaged rolls, containing 25 coins each, with a total of 15,000 rolls available for purchase through the NBU's numismatic online store and authorized banks.

This process highlights an ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting Ukraine's cultural heritage during challenging times.
