The drone assault launched by Russia utilized various types of unmanned aerial vehicles, including Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the attack commenced around 6:00 PM on March 15 and continued into the early hours of March 16.

Multiple regions across Ukraine faced threats from the skies, with Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and notably the Kyiv region among the primary targets. The Ukrainian Air Defense employed a mix of aviation, anti-aircraft missile systems, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups to thwart the assault.

This multifaceted response reflects the comprehensive strategies employed by Ukraine's military to defend against aerial threats. Preliminary reports indicate that the Russian attack involved drones launched from multiple directions, including Orel, Kursk, and temporarily occupied Crimea.

This particular attack was characterized by a synchronized offensive that surprised many analysts due to its timing, occurring during the morning hours. Over 100 of the intercepted drones were identified as Shahed-type, illustrating the Russian military's reliance on particular UAV models for such strikes.

Casualties from debris were reported in several Kyiv districts, including Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi, confirming the dangers posed even when drones are shot down. Despite the impressive number of interceptions, the attack highlighted ongoing vulnerabilities in the Ukrainian airspace.

As of 11:00 AM on March 16, the Air Force continued to monitor for additional flying UAVs, suggesting that threats may still linger in the region. Ukraine has faced increased drone incursions in recent months, leading to heightened tensions and security alerts in various regions.

This engagement underscores the protracted nature of the conflict and the continuous evolution of tactics employed by both sides as the war enters its second year.
