Since the evening of March 7, Ukrainian Air Defense units have been engaged in a rigorous defense against a Russian aerial assault that included a mix of Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas drones. The attack initiated at approximately 7 p.m. involved drones originating from several key locations, including the Bryansk and Kursk regions of Russia, as well as the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea. According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the drones targeted 11 different locations across the country. Early assessments reveal that while 98 drones were destroyed, two Iskander-M ballistic missiles successfully struck their intended targets, which resulted in considerable damage, including a fire that broke out in Kryvyi Rih. The Ukrainian Defense Forces employed a multi-faceted approach to counter the onslaught. Their response involved aerial support, anti-aircraft missile installations, and electronic warfare units. This integrated effort proved effective, as almost 84% of the attacking drones were neutralized during the operation. Despite the successful interception efforts, the effectiveness of the Russian drones remains notable, underscored by the utilization of various drone types and missile systems in the attack. Approximately 70 of the drones were identified as Shahed models, which have been a persistent threat in Ukraine’s airspace since the onset of conflict. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, assessing damages and response protocols following the attack. The resurgence in drone assaults highlights the ongoing volatility in Ukrainian air security, raising concerns about future aerial threats and the capacity to intercept them effectively. As the conflict endures, the resilience displayed by Ukrainian Air Defense forces signifies crucial protective measures against further aggression. Continued international support and developments in air defense technology are vital for bolstering security measures moving forward.
