During an interview with CNN, President Zelensky detailed the steps Ukraine took to thwart what he described as a vast offensive operation planned by Russia for late last year and into this spring. He emphasized that Ukrainian counter-offensive actions played a crucial role in stopping the Russian advance.

Zelensky noted not only the strategic importance of this success but also the impact on Ukrainian lives and morale. According to Zelensky, Ukraine's defense capabilities were significantly enhanced through the use of drone technology, leading to considerable Russian military losses.

He stated that Russia is reportedly losing between 30,000 to 35,000 troops each month, largely due to the effectiveness of FPV drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles. This shift in warfare underscores how technology has become a pivotal element in the ongoing conflict.

Zelensky also commented on the motivations behind Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions, suggesting that Putin never genuinely sought to end the conflict. Instead, he posited that Putin fears pressure from Western leaders, including the United States, which affects his willingness to negotiate.

The president further warned that as Russia continues to secure funding through various channels, including earnings from conflicts in the Middle East, its capacity to sustain the war may become more pronounced. Zelensky highlighted a forecasted fiscal deficit of over $100 billion for Russia by 2026, emphasizing the long-term implications of sustained military engagement.

In light of these developments, Zelensky called for increased pressure from the U.S. and the international community on Russia to ensure that negotiations, if they occur, are genuine and lead to meaningful outcomes.

He expressed concern that without sustained international support, Putin would continue to demand unrealistic concessions from Ukraine. The dynamics of the conflict remain complex, with increasing concerns about how external events, such as the situation in Iran, might embolden Russia and affect Ukraine's security landscape moving forward.

Zelensky’s statements serve as a reminder of the ongoing volatility and critical nature of international support in the conflict.
