Belgian Diplomat Calls for Strengthening Ukraine's Global Role

In an exclusive interview with Ukrinform, Zenon Koval, a Belgian diplomat and member of the Executive of the World Congress of Ukrainians, discussed Ukraine's diplomatic efforts to strengthen its international standing. He pointed to recent proposals for air defense support to Gulf countries as a strategic opportunity for Ukraine.

Koval outlined the benefits of forming new alliances, noting the financial resources and varied interests of Gulf nations. He stated, "It would certainly do us no harm to have even more good partners," emphasizing the need for Ukraine to solidify its global presence.

Leveraging Relationships

Koval explained that establishing and utilizing leverage is essential for enhancing Ukraine's global role. He pointed out that pursuing these relationships does not conflict with Ukraine’s existing strong ties to the European Union, which also seeks to strengthen connections with Gulf states for regional conflict resolution.

He highlighted the unprecedented coalition supporting Ukraine, composed of around 50 countries under the Ramstein format. Koval cautioned that preserving and expanding this coalition is critical, as adversaries seek to weaken its unity.

Diplomatic Challenges and Responses

Koval noted that significant diplomatic efforts are necessary to defend against threats to the coalition's integrity. He expressed concern that rising oil prices linked to the Middle Eastern crisis could bolster the aggressor state involved.

He also questioned the clarity of the U.S. administration's strategy regarding the energy crisis, emphasizing its far-reaching implications.

In recent developments, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine has received six requests for assistance from Middle Eastern nations concerning the conflict with Iran. Ukrainian officials are awaiting the return of their delegation from the Gulf for more details on the types and amounts of aid expected from these countries.
