What Happened

Sales of new gasoline vehicles in Ukraine increased in May 2026, capturing 39.9% of the total market. This marks a rise from 36% recorded in the same month last year. The information was reported by the Ukrainian Automotive Manufacturers Association (Ukravtoprom).

Key Details

Last month, vehicles with traditional combustion engines made up over 60% of the market for new passenger cars, a notable jump from the 54.3% share from the previous year. These figures indicate a growing preference for gasoline models among consumers.

Of the new vehicle sales in May, hybrid vehicles also saw growth, rising to 30.8%, up from 27.1% last year. Diesel cars represented 20.7% of sales, which is an increase from 18.3% one year prior.

Conversely, electric vehicle sales saw a decline, falling from 18.4% to just 8.5%. Sales of vehicles equipped with gas fuel systems remained minimal, maintaining less than 1% of total new vehicle sales.

Hyundai Tucson emerged as the most popular gasoline vehicle in May, while the Toyota RAV-4 led the hybrid category. In the diesel segment, Renault Duster was the top-selling model.

Among electric vehicles, the BYD Sea Lion 06EV had the highest sales figures, and the Hyundai Tucson also topped the gas vehicle sales category.

Why It Matters

The transition in the automotive market reflects changing consumer preferences in Ukraine, particularly as economic factors influence vehicle purchases. The increased share of gasoline and hybrid models could signal a revival in consumer confidence and market stability.

Background

This development in vehicle sales follows a trend of fluctuating consumer behavior in the Ukrainian automotive market following years of economic challenges. The overall market dynamics continue to evolve, with traditional vehicles regaining traction.

In April 2026, for instance, the Ukrainian fleet saw a decline of 12% in the addition of diesel cars compared to the previous year but hints at market resilience as new vehicles are introduced. The increase in gasoline and hybrid vehicle sales may be tied to a variety of factors, including price shifts, availability, and consumer trust in traditional combustion engines amidst rising fuel costs and changing infrastructure for electric vehicles.
