Counterintelligence officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police thwarted a terrorist act aimed at Ukrainian military personnel in Poltava. According to the SBU, the two suspects, both 16 years old, were caught preparing a homemade explosive device in a hotel room.

This incident marks a significant breach of security, as the minors were reportedly recruited through Telegram channels focused on offering "easy money" opportunities by Russian operatives. The SBU reported that the detained individuals were instructed by a Russian handler on how to fabricate explosives using readily available materials.

The attackers' plan involved planting the explosive device under a military vehicle, which was intended to be detonated remotely as soldiers approached. During the arrests, authorities seized the prepared explosive device and smartphones containing incriminating evidence.

The two minors face serious charges under Ukraine's Criminal Code, including preparation for a terrorist act and intentional destruction of property. If convicted, they could face up to 12 years in prison along with the confiscation of their property.

This operation was conducted in collaboration with the regional prosecutor's office and highlights ongoing threats to Ukrainian national security, particularly from youth being manipulated into terrorism. The swift action by the SBU underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in preventing attacks on Ukraine's military forces.

The pattern of recruitment and radicalization among minors raises concerns about the effectiveness of current counter-radicalization strategies. As the conflict with Russia continues, such incidents may become more frequent if underlying issues are not addressed.
