The Financial Times reports that the peace negotiating process in Ukraine has descended into a deadlock, attributed to Trump's waning interest. As Trump's focus pivots towards the escalating situation in the Middle East, specifically Iran, sources indicate that this shift in attention undermines the prospect of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Four EU diplomats familiar with the discussions have warned that the distractions posed by the turmoil in the Middle East are benefiting Russia, with implications for oil prices, sanctions, and long-term military support for Ukraine. Higher oil prices and the possible suspension of US sanctions are seen as advantageous to Russia, while US weapons stockpiles critical for Ukraine's military operation are reportedly being depleted, a shift that could have dire consequences for its defense to the east.

Recent trilateral peace talks, which included representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the US, have not yielded significant progress. The last talk, held in Geneva on February 17-18, was intended to lay the groundwork for a subsequent meeting in Abu Dhabi on March 5.

However, this next meeting was postponed due to US-Israeli military actions in Iran, with no alternative date yet planned, leaving the peace process hanging in uncertainty. EU officials are alarmed by the reallocation of US foreign policy priorities.

They caution that delays in US military support to Ukraine, particularly in air defense systems, could seriously undermine Kyiv's position. Despite their efforts to keep Ukraine in the international spotlight, the attention diverted by the Middle East crisis casts a shadow on the delicate discussions aimed at ending the conflict.

During recent meetings at the White House, there have been no indications that the US administration intends to escalate pressure on Russia. Trump's prevailing view that Russia holds a stronger position than Ukraine further complicates the negotiations.

Although US officials express a commitment to aiding Ukraine, their lack of interest in the specifics of a negotiated settlement raises questions about the future of US engagement in the peace process. While President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to express Ukraine's readiness for discussions, the differences between US and Russian positions remain substantial.

Erdogan's offer to host future talks may provide a potential avenue for renewed negotiations, but the timeline and arrangements remain unresolved, prolonging the uncertainty surrounding Ukraine's diplomatic efforts.
