What Happened

Russian drones conducted an attack on port infrastructure in Chornomorsk, damaging a terminal operated by Kernel, Ukraine's largest sunflower oil producer. The incident occurred during the night of May 2-3, as reported by the company's press service.

Key Details

Direct hits from the drones destroyed and damaged several storage tanks at the terminal, leading to a leak of over 1,100 tonnes of vegetable oil. Fortunately, Kernel stated that none of the oil entered the sea, mitigating potential environmental impact.

A fire broke out and engulfed part of the production facilities, but it was subsequently extinguished. The attack also inflicted damage to logistics infrastructure, four railway tank cars, and office premises.

Due to the scale of the damage, the terminal has halted both the intake and shipment of products. One employee sustained injuries but is reported to be in moderate condition, with no threat to life.

As a precaution and to honor export commitments, Kernel has shifted operations to partner port terminals in Odesa and along the Danube River. The company is also utilizing rail transport to facilitate the continuation of their export contracts,

Why It Matters

This attack signifies an ongoing threat to Ukraine's agricultural infrastructure amid the prolonged conflict. Kernel's role as the largest sunflower oil producer makes any disruption of its operations particularly significant for the country's economy and global agricultural markets.

Background

The recent drone strike follows a similar incident in August 2024 when another Kernel oilseed processing plant in western Ukraine was damaged in a Russian attack. This ongoing pattern of targeting agricultural facilities underscores the strategic importance of such infrastructure in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
