The incident occurred as the agent attempted to flee from the scene after laying the homemade bomb disguised in a pot. According to SBU reports, the suspect, a drug-dependent resident from Zhytomyr, was recruited by Russian forces while seeking funds for drugs through Telegram channels.

Following his recruitment, he was dispatched to Rivne where he rented an apartment. In his rented accommodation, he followed instructions from Russian intelligence to manufacture the explosive device.
It has been established that the explosives were enhanced with nuts to increase their lethality. The plan reportedly involved remote detonation via a mobile phone attached to the bomb.
To maintain a low profile, the agent wore military fatigues when heading to carry out the attack. Upon apprehension, SBU operatives seized a smartphone that contained evidence linking him to Russian operatives.
Authorities have indicated that the suspect faces multiple charges under Ukraine's Criminal Code, including aiding the preparation of a terrorist act and illegal manufacturing of explosives. As investigations progress, the SBU has detained the individual, who could face up to 12 years in prison, along with asset confiscation.
This operation underlines the ongoing risks associated with espionage and terrorism in Ukraine's current security landscape. The SBU has previously arrested other agents involved in similar plots against key infrastructure targeting major cities, including Kyiv.
The effectiveness of preemptive actions taken by the SBU is evident in this incident, reflecting the agency's commitment to thwarting domestic threats posed by foreign operatives. Such operations contribute to maintaining public safety and stability in the region amidst ongoing conflict.
