Russia Doubles Drone and Munition Use in Southern Ukraine

The use of loitering munitions and fixed-wing attack drones by Russian forces has escalated significantly, particularly in the southern regions of Ukraine, where daily deployment has increased from 200-250 units to over 500. This surge in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including the Molniya and Lancet types, has raised concerns over the ongoing conflict.

Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Defense Forces of the South, discussed these developments, stating that the intensified drone activity is most pronounced in the Prydniprovske sector. Here, approximately 150 loitering munitions are reported daily.

Despite Ukraine's air defense systems successfully intercepting many of these UAVs—reportedly downing at least two out of three—their operational range poses a challenge for effective defense. Such aerial tactics have resulted in intensified shelling of populated areas, particularly affecting settlements on the right bank of the Kherson region and the Zaporizhzhia region along the contact line.

Voloshyn noted a sharp increase in attacks, recording at least 40-45 shelling incidents daily. From March 8 to March 12, Russian forces have conducted 226 strikes using Shahed drones and approximately 80 air strikes with guided and unguided munitions, which included the deployment of 383 guided bombs and nearly 130 unguided rockets.

This offensive operation in the south has resulted in the loss of 1,243 personnel and significant amounts of military equipment for Russian forces, along with 126 attacks recorded on the southern axis during the same period. The ongoing military activities reflect a strategic pivot by Russian commanders, likely aimed at regaining momentum amid increasing Ukrainian counter-operations.

The increased intensity of warfare raises alarms about the humanitarian impact on affected civilian populations and the potential for further escalation in violence. Experts suggest that these tactics reflect a larger pattern of adaptation by Russian forces as they seek to maintain operational effectiveness while facing mounting challenges on the battlefield.
