Kyiv Shooting: Shooter Identified as Moscow-Born Man

What Happened

On April 18, 2023, a shooting in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv left five people dead. The shooting was carried out by a 58-year-old male, who was subsequently killed during a police operation.

According to Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, the shooter opened fire on passersby in the street before barricading himself inside a supermarket. Local authorities reported that he used an automatic weapon during the attack, which led to widespread panic in the area.

Kravchenko stated that four individuals were killed in the street and one inside the supermarket. Following the incident, a fire broke out in the flat where the assailant was registered.

During a raid by the KORD special unit—Ukraine's tactical response team—the shooter was killed, thereby ending the threat. Ukrainska Pravda reported that the shooter was identified as Dmytro Vasylchenkov, born on April 21, 1968, in Moscow.

He reportedly held Ukrainian citizenship and had previously resided in Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, before moving to Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided updates, stating that in total, five people had died as a result of the shooting, and ten others were hospitalized.

Four hostages held by the shooter were rescued during the operation by special forces.
