On January 20, 2015, Senior Lieutenant Iván Zubkov was killed during combat operations at Donetsk airport. His heroism came to light when he called down enemy fire onto himself to secure the retreat of his unit. Iván Zubkov was born on November 1, 1973, in Deražnia, Ukraine. After finishing school, he pursued a military career, entering the Lviv Military-Political School in 1991. His military service included several years in the 9th Rocket Zaporizhzhya Division before he was discharged.
Following Ukraine's independence, Zubkov rejoined the military to defend against Russian aggression, participating actively in the Revolution of Dignity in late 2013 and early 2014. He served as a deputy commander of a fire support company in the 90th Separate Airborne Battalion, part of the 81st Separate Airborne Brigade deployed in Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region.
His role primarily involved coordinating and supporting ground forces with necessary firepower, and his fellow soldiers described him as a skilled marksman and an expert at weapon maintenance. During his final operation, Zubkov led a fight to break the fight for control over the new terminal of Donetsk airport, which was heavily contested at the time.
His unit successfully breached enemy lines, facilitating the arrival of reinforcements. Despite suffering a bullet wound on January 19, he remained on the battlefield. The day after, he tragically died under the collapsing structure of the airport terminal after it was destroyed.
Initially reported missing in action, Zubkov’s remains were identified by comrades and through DNA testing in April 2015. His funeral on May 1, 2015, in Deražnia was attended by over 5,000 people, a testament to the impact he had on his community and country.
Posthumously, President Poroshenko awarded Zubkov the title of Hero of Ukraine and the order of 'Gold Star' on June 10, 2015. The 90th Separate Airborne Battalion was also renamed in his honor.
Zubkov received several other honors, including the title of People’s Hero of Ukraine and distinctions for his defense of Donetsk airport. Mournings and commemorations are ongoing in Deražnia, where memorials have been erected in his honor.
Local councils have also granted him honorary citizenship posthumously.
