Patriarch Filaret, the honorary Patriarch of Kyiv and all Rus’-Ukraine, passed away recently at the age of 97. His influence in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been significant, particularly during the establishment of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

According to Andriy Kovalov, a religious scholar and former press secretary for Patriarch Filaret, the funeral is set for March 22, pending final discussions within the church's Synod regarding the burial arrangements. Kovalov noted that he heard this information from Father Boris Tabachak, the rector of the Volodymyr Cathedral.
The funeral arrangements are still being finalized as the Synod must approve the specific format for the ceremony, including details about the farewell rites and the burial itself. Patriarch Filaret had previously expressed his wish to be laid to rest at the Volodymyr Cathedral, reflecting his deep connection to this significant site.
This decision emphasizes the Patriarch's legacy and the respect he garnered throughout his life. A ceremony of this magnitude is expected to draw many attendees from various religious communities and beyond.
The significance of Patriarch Filaret's contributions to the religious landscape in Ukraine has resonated widely, and many will likely come to pay their last respects. The Synod's eventual decree will also clarify how the church will honor his legacy during the proceedings, underscoring the impact he had on Ukrainian society and spirituality.
The funeral will be held amid ongoing discussions within the church about its future directions, especially in light of the changing religious landscape in Ukraine. Patriarch Filaret's approach during his tenure has shaped many of these discussions, and now, as the church deals with his passing, the implications of his life’s work will be examined anew.
