Background

Tima, a special forces operative with the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, previously worked in construction. His former projects now stand as ruins due to the conflict. Motivated by the devastation and a deep sense of duty, he volunteered for military service in 2015.

Military Journey

With experience in athletics and marksmanship, Tima was well-prepared for a military career. He made the pivotal decision to enlist in the Marine Corps as a reconnaissance marksman when Russia launched a full-scale invasion in 2022.

Tima has faced the harsh realities of warfare, stating that losing comrades is the most challenging aspect of his service. "It's always the loss of comrades that hits hardest," he said, recalling the friendships he formed before the escalation.

Training and Insights

Tima currently plays an essential role in training new recruits, finding satisfaction in teaching soldiers from various units. He values their enthusiasm and considers it one of the most rewarding parts of his job.

Since the full-scale invasion began, Tima has observed enhancements in the Ukrainian military's technological capabilities. However, he cautions against underestimating the enemy, emphasizing the need for respect and strategic planning in combat. "You must treat them with respect and think about how to defeat them," he advised.

Encounters with Captured Soldiers

Tima has also shared his experiences with captured Russian soldiers during interrogations. Their attitudes varied dramatically, ranging from humility to arrogance. One soldier recounted his achievements in combat with unsettling indifference, which incited Tima's anger.

"Honestly, it made my blood boil," he expressed regarding the insensitivity of the captured enemy.

Vision for Victory

For Tima, a true victory for Ukraine signifies the complete restoration of its territorial integrity. He urges his fellow Ukrainians to maintain hope, stating, "Hold on, don’t lose hope.

We have no other choice. Everything will be fine—I believe in this." His message resonates deeply, especially on Ukrainian Volunteer Day, which honors those who have defended the country's independence, including Tima himself.
