Tima, a special forces operative with the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, once built infrastructure now destroyed by war. Motivated by the devastation of his former work and a strong sense of duty, he joined the military as a volunteer.

His journey began in 2015, as he found himself increasingly drawn into the conflict. With his background in athletics and marksmanship, Tima was well-prepared for military service.
He made a definitive choice to join the Marine Corps as a reconnaissance marksman right at the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Throughout his service, Tima has witnessed the brutal realities of warfare.
He described the emotional toll of losing comrades as the hardest aspect of his experience. 'It's always the loss of comrades that hits hardest,' he shared, reflecting on the friendships formed before the escalation.
Currently, Tima plays a crucial role in training new recruits, imparting skills to soldiers from various units. He finds fulfillment in watching their eagerness to learn, stating that it is one of the most rewarding parts of his job.
Tima noted that since the commencement of the full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian military has improved its technological capabilities. However, he remained cautious about underestimating the enemy, emphasizing the need for respect and strategic thinking in warfare.
'You must treat them with respect and think about how to defeat them,' he cautioned. This insight is particularly relevant as both sides continue to adapt and evolve in the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, Tima recounted striking experiences with captured Russian soldiers during interrogations. He was particularly struck by their varying attitudes and the stark contrast between humility and arrogance.
One soldier, he recalled, recounted his supposed achievements in combat with unnerving nonchalance, fueling Tima's resolve further. 'Honestly, it made my blood boil,' he remarked about the callousness displayed by one captured enemy.
For Tima, victory for Ukraine means the complete restoration of its territorial integrity. He communicated a heartfelt message to his fellow Ukrainians: 'Hold on, don’t lose hope.
We have no other choice. Everything will be fine—I believe in this.' His words resonate deeply, especially on Ukrainian Volunteer Day, which honors those who have stood up for the country’s independence over the years, including Tima himself.
