In Turkey, the inaugural Turkish-language book chronicling the Russian-Ukrainian war has recently hit the shelves. The work has been authored by Canfer Balcik, a retired colonel and expert in international relations.
During an interview with Ukrinform, Balcik explained that his military background and keen interest in history drove him to closely monitor the war and its global coverage. He expressed surprise at the intense resistance exhibited by Ukrainians against Russian aggression, which prompted him to share their story with the Turkish public and the wider world.
Balcik's personal encounters with traumatic events during the conflict, notably the bombing of a children's hospital, shifted his perspective, leading him to focus on the war's impact on children, women, and the elderly. Balcik asserts that witnessing the realities of war firsthand is crucial for any writer addressing the subject.
He remarked on the significance of experiencing the turmoil personally, especially as someone with a military background, believing it equips him to portray the true scope of warfare more authentically. The process of writing about the conflict internally grants authors a unique lens to reveal the real dimensions of war.
His book, titled "Children Who Cannot Laugh While Playing," delves into the historic, societal, and humanitarian aspects of the war, paying special attention to how it has affected children and their futures—issues he believes are intrinsically linked to the future of Ukraine itself. The timing of this publication adds to a wave of recent literature in Turkey that addresses Ukrainian affairs, including topics like the historical oppression of Crimean Tatars by Russia and the contemporary history of Ukraine.
Balcik's narrative encourages a better understanding of the disabled childhoods being molded by conflict. Through his writings, he aims to foster empathy and awareness regarding the war's toll on society, aligning with a broader movement to share Ukrainian stories with global audiences.
As literature continues to bridge cultural gaps, Balcik’s voice contributes significantly to the discourse surrounding the ongoing crisis.
