During an interview with Bloomberg while on a state visit to India, President Stubb emphasized the potential benefits Ukraine could gain from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly its effect on Russia's military cooperation with Iran. He asserted that if Ukraine had been equipped with a sophisticated air defense system similar to the ones deployed in the Persian Gulf during the initial days of its conflict, the war could have ended much earlier. Stubb highlighted that European countries' annual aid to Ukraine is roughly equivalent to the estimated $40 billion cost of the first week of military operations in Iran. Since the onset of the war in 2022, European support for Ukraine has reached an estimated €250-300 billion, or $290-350 billion. Stubb noted that the heightened military activity in the Middle East, including attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, may hinder the cooperative efforts between Iran and Russia in missile and defense technology development. Despite some setbacks, Stubb mentioned that Russia already possesses factories producing Shahed drones using Iranian technology. He also warned of adverse consequences stemming from the Middle Eastern conflict, particularly the potential rise in oil prices, which may inadvertently strengthen Russia's military capabilities. Nevertheless, Stubb expressed optimism that the shifting global focus toward Iran could create diplomatic openings for negotiations concerning Ukraine, allowing negotiators to work without the intense scrutiny typically surrounding such discussions. In recent statements, Stubb reiterated the importance of a coordinated European approach in dialogues with Russia, emphasizing that the EU should have a seat at the negotiating table due to its financial contributions to the war effort. He asserted that any discussions should align closely with Ukraine's interests and strategic goals. The continuing dynamics of the conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East suggest a fluid geopolitical landscape, with implications for international diplomacy moving forward.
