The European Council has resolved to prolong existing sanctions against Russia until September 15, 2026. This extension applies to individuals and entities responsible for actions that threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.

Approximately 2,600 individuals and organizations remain subject to these restrictive measures. The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes, as well as a prohibition on providing funds or other economic resources to those on the list.
The move aligns with the European Union's ongoing commitment to apply pressure on Russia in response to its aggression against Ukraine since February 2022. Over the past years, the EU has significantly expanded its sanctions framework to impair Russia's economic capacity and restrict its access to critical technologies and markets necessary for sustaining military operations.
Additionally, the European Council's recent decision includes the removal of two individuals from the sanctions list and the exclusion of five deceased persons. Despite these adjustments, the broader sanctions framework remains robust, reaffirming the EU's determination to support Ukraine in maintaining its internationally recognized borders.
The initiative to extend sanctions was announced following a meeting of member states’ ambassadors in the COREPER II format, reflecting a unified stance among EU leaders against Russia's continued military aggression. The European Council stresses that it will keep intensifying its efforts to ensure Russia halts its military operations and engages in meaningful peace negotiations.
In light of this extension, the EU reiterated its unwavering commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Support and pressure on Russia are priorities, as the EU seeks to create conditions conducive to lasting peace in the region.
The ongoing sanctions serve as a vital tool in the EU's foreign policy strategy towards Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing collective security and stability in Europe.
