In a Sunday interview with CNN journalist Fareed Zakaria, President Zelensky articulated Ukraine's anxiety over the reliance on U.S. support in light of current events in the Middle East.
He stated that Ukraine does not want to lose the crucial backing of the United States while it is explicitly focused on conflicts such as those involving Iran and Israel. Zelensky underscored the risks of potential delays in military aid and defense materials, which are critical for Ukraine's ongoing defense efforts against Russian aggression.
'We would very much not want the United States to turn away from the issue of Ukraine because of the Middle East,' Zelensky remarks, pointing out the high stakes involved in ongoing military support. Zelensky's statements come as the war in Ukraine persists, and his government seeks to ensure continued military aid from its Western allies.
The President noted that the U.S. has been using substantial amounts of ammunition and military resources in strikes in the region, raising concerns in Ukraine about a possible reduction in assistance aimed at bolstering its defenses.
He warned that this shift could seriously undermine Ukraine’s capability to resist further Russian advances. The Ukrainian leader emphasized the role of Ukrainian UAV experts providing crucial assistance to Gulf countries, indicating the ongoing commitment of Ukraine to global security efforts.
These experts, led by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, are reportedly advising Gulf nations on countering Iranian drone attacks and protecting civilian populations. Zelensky confirmed that the U.S.
has reached out for assistance, with Ukraine offering its drone technologies and electronic warfare systems as part of a broader collaboration. Amidst these developments, Zelensky is also exploring alternative partnerships to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
He specifically mentioned the Franco-Italian SAMP/T air defense system as a potential option for bolstering Ukraine’s defenses against ballistic threats while waiting for more clarity from U.S. partners.
'This year, we will see if the new SAMP/T systems can intercept ballistic missiles. If it works, it will provide long-term and valuable support,' he added, highlighting ongoing efforts to secure effective defense solutions in the face of persistent threats.
Overall, Zelensky's remarks reflect a critical moment for Ukraine as it navigates the complexities of international support amid shifting global crisis priorities. The continued focus on U.S.
support remains pivotal for Ukraine’s strategy against Russian offensives, bringing urgency to the discussions about defense collaboration and military aid.
