In a recent interview with CNN, President Volodymyr Zelensky made it clear that he believes Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has no intention of ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. Zelensky's comments come against the backdrop of intensifying conflict and diplomatic struggles.
He stressed the importance of increased pressure from the United States on Russia to foster any hope for negotiations. Zelensky stated that Putin had been acting strategically, feigning interest in negotiations while avoiding any genuine commitment to peace.
The Ukrainian leader suggested that this behavior was partly motivated by fear of U.S. influence, specifically referencing previous interactions with President Trump.
Zelensky asserted that Putin prefers ultimatums instead of actual discussions, demanding Ukraine withdraw from its territories, but he warned this would not suffice for the Russian leader, indicating Putin's appetite for more territory. Zelensky pointed out that the situation in Iran is financially benefiting Putin, exacerbating concerns about continued aggression.
He further noted that the lifting of sanctions on Russia by the United States only reinforces Putin's confidence in persisting with the military campaign against Ukraine. As tensions escalate, Zelensky advocated for immediate U.S.
engagement on the matter. Ukraine has reportedly requested a trilateral meeting with American officials, expressing that such a dialogue format has strong support.
However, this meeting has been postponed due to complications arising from concerns about Iran. Zelensky urged for swift action to tackle these challenges, insisting that failure to convene at both technical and leadership levels will hinder the prospects for peace.
He reiterated the need for collective efforts to apply stronger pressure on Russia as foundational for any peaceful resolution. These developments underscore the complexities of Ukraine's position in the conflict and the international diplomatic landscape.
Zelensky's remarks resonate with Ukraine's broader strategy to rally international support amid the protracted war against Russian aggression.
