The European Parliament announced Zelensky and Matviichuk as the inaugural recipients of the European Order of Merit, a new award designed to honor significant contributions to European integration and the advocacy of European values. President Roberta Metsola highlighted the importance of recognizing those who foster unity and resilience across the continent during the announcement.

The award celebrates individuals who have played vital roles in overcoming challenges and advancing democracy in Europe. Alongside Zelensky, the award's Distinguished Members category includes prominent figures such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, both of whom have had substantial influence in European politics and beyond.
The award seeks to elevate individuals committed to the European ideal, emphasizing the shared values that bind the continent together. Matviichuk, a notable human rights defender, has been recognized in the Member category, where she joins other distinguished individuals including chef and humanitarian José Andrés, basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and members of the rock band U2.
The recognition brings further attention to Matviichuk’s efforts in advocating for human rights amid Ukraine's ongoing conflict. The European Order of Merit was created last year to mark the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.
This initiative reflects a growing acknowledgment within the EU of the need for solidarity and support for those championing democratic principles, particularly in nations facing external aggression. The official award ceremony is scheduled for May 18-21 during the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg.
As debates continue in the European Parliament regarding concrete support for Ukraine, the establishment of this award signifies a promising step toward enhancing international solidarity. It affirms the EU's commitment to recognizing outstanding efforts in promoting democracy and addressing human rights issues across Europe.
