During an interview with CNBC, Witkoff emphasized that both Ukraine and Russia appear 'weary and tired' of the prolonged conflict, which has been underway since 2014. He noted that the current negotiations are more purposeful than previous discussions, highlighting that Ukrainians believe they have made more progress in recent meetings than in the past four years combined.

Witkoff expressed cautious optimism that both sides could be inching closer to a peace settlement sometime this year. Witkoff shared that he is encouraged by the current climate surrounding the talks, stating, "That negotiation is a purposeful negotiation." He reflected on past experiences, including his role in the Middle East peace process, and expressed hope that dealings between the parties could reach a similar inflection point.
This sentiment aligns with the ongoing assessment that both Ukraine and Russia might be open to a resolution as the conflict has inflicted significant tolls on each side. The envoy's remarks came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that trilateral negotiations with U.S.
and Russian delegations, originally scheduled for this week, were postponed at the request of the American side. The postponement was attributed to the current situation in Iran, which adds another layer of complexity to the geopolitical environment affecting the talks.
Despite the challenges, Witkoff remains steadfast in his belief that a resolution can be achieved. He has previously noted that the discussions are marked by a sense of purpose that suggests both sides might be ready to consider an end to hostilities.
The situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, and Witkoff's insights offer a glimmer of hope in an otherwise tense atmosphere surrounding the negotiations.
