Ukrainian Sculpture Unveiled in Prague Ahead of Venice Biennale

In Prague, the sculpture 'Origami-Deer' stands as a testament to the artistic spirit of Ukraine, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity. At the unveiling event held at Jan Palach Square, Ukrainian Ambassador to the Czech Republic Vasyl Zvarych expressed gratitude to organizers for their efforts in showcasing Ukrainian art to the world.

Zvarych described the sculpture as more than just a work of art; it is a symbol of Pokrovsk, a city in the Donetsk region enduring the trials of war while holding on to hope and dignity. Zvarych emphasized that the sculpture embodies a narrative of a city that believes in its future despite challenges.

'Origami-Deer' was evacuated from Pokrovsk, and its journey to the Venice Biennale signifies the strength of culture over destruction. The sculpture aims to convey that art can communicate in ways that transcend verbal expression.

This event in Prague serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and security, and the importance of cultural solidarity. The exhibit is part of a broader cultural diplomacy initiative supported by Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture, UNESCO, and the charity organization Sushko Philanthropy.

Following its presentation in Prague, 'Origami-Deer' will tour other European cities including Warsaw, Vienna, Berlin, Brussels, and Paris before arriving in Venice. The theme of the Ukrainian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, opening May 9 and running until November, is 'Safety Guarantees.' This theme highlights the unresolved security assurances that Ukraine forfeited its nuclear arsenal for in 1996 and underscores the fragility of peace.

The project also reflects the resilience of the Ukrainian people as they navigate the complexities of war. The sculpture, which replaced a fragment of a Soviet aircraft in Pokrovsk in 2019, was swiftly dismantled and relocated as the front line approached the city in August 2024.

Zvarych's remarks signal a commitment not only to showcase Ukrainian culture but also to advocate for the recognition and support of Ukraine in the international arena.
