The National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine shared the video on Facebook, marking a significant milestone in Ukraine's Antarctic exploration history. The second expedition was notable for the inclusion of female team members for the first time.

Meteorologists Svitlana Krakovska and Lyudmyla Mankivska, cook Halyna Kolotnytska, and geophysicist Maryna Orlova made history during this expedition. Previously, no women had participated in British teams at the station or in the first Ukrainian expedition to Antarctica.

Ukrainian polar scientists noted that this inclusion was a breakthrough, albeit temporary. After the second expedition, an unwritten ban on including women in Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions lasted for nearly two decades.

Changes began only in 2018 when women returned to the Akademik Vernadsky station, participating in both annual and seasonal missions. Presently, the 31st expedition is led by meteorologist Anzhelika Hanchuk, symbolizing ongoing progress toward gender equality in Arctic research.

This video is part of a four-part series titled "First at Vernadsky," commemorating the 30th anniversary of the station’s transfer from the United Kingdom to Ukraine. Throughout the series, exclusive archival footage has been released, showcasing the arrival of the first Ukrainian group, their transition of responsibilities from the British, and details of the first Ukrainian wintering.

This collective effort not only celebrates past achievements but also emphasizes the importance of diversity in scientific endeavors. The recent highlight of record warmth experienced at the Akademik Vernadsky station underlines the changing conditions in Antarctica and the relevance of ongoing research in understanding climate impacts.

The latest rotation began on March 3, involving the transition between the 30th and 31st Antarctic expeditions, further establishing Ukraine's commitment to Antarctic research.
