The Russian military's potential deployment of unmanned surface vessels in the Black Sea has become a pressing concern for Ukrainian defense officials. Dmytro Pletenchuk, speaking on Ukrainian television, emphasized that this threat is credible and should not be underestimated.
He highlighted that Russia has been actively promoting developments in unmanned technology, which could include these vessels. Pletenchuk noted that prior to the full-scale invasion, Russia had already incorporated unmanned boats into its naval operations.
The Ukrainian Navy is maintaining vigilance as it monitors the maritime situation, especially given that Russia's options in the Black Sea have diminished following its recent military setbacks. Pletenchuk stressed the importance of readiness and awareness in the face of potential threats, particularly as Russia seeks innovative ways to exert its influence in the region.
In a demonstration of Ukraine’s advancement in unmanned systems, Pletenchuk pointed out the recent joint exercises with NATO off the coast of Portugal. These exercises showcased Ukraine as a leader in utilizing unmanned technology effectively within military operations.
The participation of Ukrainian representatives in commanding roles during the exercises reflects the capability of Ukraine's naval forces. This proactive engagement with NATO is symbolic of Ukraine's commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions.
The success of these exercises, highlighted by the operational involvement of Ukrainian drones, serves to reinforce Ukraine's technological advancements in naval warfare. Earlier reports indicated that Russia had tested its Skorlupa naval drone, which is designed to carry FPV (first-person view) drones, further underscoring the evolution of unmanned warfare tactics being utilized in the region.
The presence of unmanned vessels poses additional challenges to maritime security in the Black Sea, necessitating continued monitoring and response strategies from the Ukrainian Navy and its allies.
