The Media Freedom Award was presented to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine and the Journalist Solidarity Centers network to honor their efforts in aiding media workers during the continuing war. The award reflects the dedication shown in creating essential support structures for journalists, as detailed by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.

Established during the full-scale invasion, these solidarity centers operate in major cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk. The centers provide crucial resources such as personal protective equipment and technical gear, ensuring that journalists can continue their work, even in frontline areas.
This support has enabled local media to operate and report from communities situated near conflict zones. The initiative has garnered recognition not only within Ukraine but also internationally, highlighting the proactive measures taken to protect journalistic integrity and promote press freedom during times of crisis.
As the situation remains perilous for journalists, these solidarity efforts illustrate a model of resilience and mutual aid that has begun to draw interest from the global media community. The European jury at the award presentation specifically acknowledged how these centers facilitate access to necessary resources and coordinate assistance for journalists working under challenging conditions.
In a related achievement, a photo report about the Lviv Lyceum named after the Heroes of Kruty secured second place in the “Photo Report of the Year” category at the Årets Pressefoto competition in Denmark. This recognition further cements the important role of Ukrainian media in documenting the ongoing realities of war, showcasing the courage and dedication of professionals in the field.
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine’s recognition reflects not only their work but also the solidarity of Ukrainian society with the press. It emphasizes the importance of safeguarding media freedom, especially in the face of adversity.
The ongoing support and humanitarian initiatives offer much-needed assistance to those tasked with reporting the truth in Ukraine's current landscape.
