Ukrainian Forces Maintain Defensive Positions This Winter

During a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on March 7, Zelensky noted that the Ukrainian military achieved significant results over the winter. He emphasized that it is crucial to ensure the realization of joint European agreements concerning €90 billion in support for Ukraine over the next two years. Additionally, Zelensky mentioned the importance of a new sanction package against Russia. The discussion between the two leaders also included the situation in the Middle East, focusing on U.S. and Israeli operations against Iran. Zelensky remarked that Macron supported the idea of utilizing Ukrainian expertise in combating Iranian drones. He pointed out that Ukraine's defensive measures against Shahed drones are among the most experienced, suggesting that this knowledge could enhance collective security among allies. Separately, Zelensky referred to the 20th sanctions package against Russia, which the European Council has been unable to approve ahead of the February 24 anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, confirmed ongoing discussions with Hungary and Slovakia regarding the issue. On February 20, Hungary blocked a €90 billion loan intended for Ukraine from the EU, complicating financial support for the country’s recovery and defense efforts. As these discussions unfold, the urgency for Ukraine to secure financial backing from Western allies remains critical amidst ongoing conflict with Russia.
