Ukraine's Labor Market Faces Deepening Crisis, Expert Says

Maria Abdullina, speaking on Ukrainian Radio, expressed concern over the current state of the labor market in Ukraine, particularly highlighting the ongoing crisis in the hotel and restaurant industry. Abdullina pointed out that the primary contributors to the labor shortage include the outflow of young workers seeking opportunities abroad and the migration of skilled professionals to other sectors that offer better wages and flexible work schedules.

This trend is impacting businesses in the hospitality sector, which is grappling with the aftermath of a challenging winter that amplified operational costs. The rising expenses associated with purchasing generators and fuel have significantly increased operational costs for businesses, limiting employers' ability to raise wages in line with expectations from job seekers.

Abdullina noted that candidates have become increasingly demanding, with a striking 80% emphasizing salary as their top priority when looking for work. There is also a growing preference for flexible work hours and proximity to home, which affects hiring dynamics.

The traditional model of hiring younger staff for roles such as bartenders and waiters is becoming less feasible due to the mass exodus of this demographic. Abdullina suggested that businesses in Ukraine will need to adapt their hiring practices by broadening their candidate pool to include older workers, a strategy more commonplace in European countries.

This shift could help mitigate the effects of the current labor shortages. Despite the high demand for workers, Abdullina stated that the hospitality sector continues to struggle with the challenges of retaining staff, especially since the nature of the industry is seasonal.

As competition for employees intensifies, wages are continuing to rise, yet retaining staff remains a significant challenge due to varying demands and increasing operational costs. Surprisingly, over 80% of registered unemployed individuals in Ukraine are women, as reported by the Ministry of Economy, adding another layer to the complexities faced by the labor market.
