Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga expressed deep concern over Iran's reported attempts to restrict maritime traffic in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. In comments made on social media platform X, he highlighted that these efforts are reminiscent of Russia's blockade in the Black Sea that started in 2022, which aimed to cripple Ukraine's economy by cutting off vital shipping routes.
Sibiga's statement underscores Ukraine's unique experience with maritime security threats, an experience no other country faces quite like it today. The minister emphasized that Ukraine had successfully navigated the challenges posed by Russia's actions in the Black Sea, restoring freedom of navigation through its own means rather than succumbing to the demands of a "terrorist state." He asserted that Ukraine possesses the knowledge and technological superiority necessary to tackle challenges to maritime freedom and is ready to support international efforts to restore traffic safety in Hormuz.
Sibiga also made clear that as a nation affected by similar acts of aggression, Ukraine demands adherence to the fundamental principles of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He called for decisive actions to counter maritime terrorism, emphasizing the urgency of stabilizing global markets that heavily rely on these maritime routes.
In collaboration with international allies, Sibiga noted that leaders from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan have voiced their condemnation of Iran's blockade and readiness to engage in efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This response indicates a growing international resolve to address the implications of Iran's actions and to safeguard key trade pathways vital for global energy supplies and commerce.
This situation remains a significant point of concern for Ukraine, reflecting the broader implications that restrictive maritime actions can have on international trade and regional security. The ongoing coordination with various nations showcases Ukraine's proactive stance on maritime security, drawing from its own encounters with aggression at sea.
