Ukraine's Defence Ministry Trains Heavy Drone Operators

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry announced that operators of heavy multirotor drones are engaged in a specialized piloting course which supplements their basic military training. These operators, identified with the military occupational specialty code MOS 217, are being prepared to handle large strike drones effectively while remaining at a safe distance from the front lines.

Training is intensive, focusing on critical areas such as night navigation and the handling of payloads onboard the drones. During the training process, recruits and active personnel learn essential skills for operating these advanced systems.

They master the mechanics needed to keep a large drone airborne and acquire the ability to perform complex calculations necessary for payload-release ballistics. Given that many combat missions occur under the cover of darkness, the curriculum places heavy emphasis on optics training.

Trainees are expected to develop their skills in quickly and accurately identifying enemy positions using thermal imaging and night vision devices. As operators routinely deal with munitions, they are taught how to handle explosives correctly and how to securely attach them to the drone’s payload release systems.

The primary missions for these drone operators involve detecting concealed Russian military assets, including equipment and logistical routes, and executing strikes by releasing explosives. Ukrainian forces utilize locally developed drone systems, notably the Vampire, Kazhan, and Nemesis models, which can carry payloads ranging from 10 to 40 kilograms.

This capability allows operators to deploy anti-tank mines or specially designed high-explosive fragmentation munitions. The Defense Ministry emphasized the significance of issuing small arms to the troops as a crucial element for guarding launch positions.

As Ukraine continues to strengthen its drone capabilities, enhancements in training and technology promise to bolster its operational effectiveness in ongoing conflicts. Earlier reports indicated that Ukraine is also investing in the advancement of drone technology, with companies like Frontline Robotics unveiling new versions of the Linza 3.0 bomber drone.

Furthermore, local defense firms like SkyFall are working to expand the localization of drone production, indicating a strategic focus on enhancing domestic military capabilities and self-reliance.
