What Happened
The negotiation process regarding Ukraine's situation involving the United States and Russia is currently stalled. According to political expert Vadym Denysenko, no significant results are anticipated in the near future, aside from humanitarian agreements.
Denysenko made these comments in an exclusive interview with Ukrinform, where he emphasized that while there are preconditions for continuing the dialogue, effectiveness remains questionable.
Key Details
The expert stated, "Apart from prisoner exchanges—which are undeniably crucial—expecting breakthrough developments is unrealistic." He articulated a critical problem: a lack of real leverage to pressure Russian leadership. Denysenko pointed out, "Currently, there is no force that can genuinely exert pressure on Putin, whether from within Russia or outside it.
As long as that force is absent, he will continue to act as he currently does." In this context, Denysenko expressed skepticism regarding external players, notably Donald Trump, being able to influence the course of the war. He stated Trump's insufficient leverage means substantial negotiation results are unlikely within the current framework.
Nonetheless, Denysenko suggested that due to Trump’s political needs following events concerning Iran, Ukraine might be viewed as an opportunity for foreign policy success. He elaborated, "This presents a complex challenge for Ukraine: on one hand, it cannot afford conflict with Trump; on the other hand, it must avoid being compelled into concessions." Denysenko cautioned that emotional reactions to diplomatic pressure might have negative strategic consequences.
The expert noted that a way out of the current deadlock would only be possible if the negotiation format changes.
Why It Matters
The stalled negotiations reflect critical diplomatic challenges in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The lack of substantial influence over Russian decisions remains a key issue for Ukraine and its allies, impacting both humanitarian efforts and political dynamics.
Denysenko stressed the need to broaden the negotiation format to achieve realistic outcomes. This may involve increasing the roles of significant European countries like France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, which are currently involved in consultations with Ukraine.
He also indicated potential inclusion of other influential players such as China, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. "Expanding the format could create conditions to move the negotiation process off dead center," he concluded.
Background
Kirilo Budanov, the head of the Office of the President and Ukraine's chief negotiator with Russia, has previously stated that he sees progress towards a possible peace agreement with the Kremlin. While publicly, little has been achieved in the negotiation arena, he remains optimistic about reaching an agreement soon.
Budanov acknowledged that both sides have maintained 'maximalist' positions during U.S.-mediated talks but believes both sides will come closer in search of compromise. He remarked on Russia's financial motivations, mentioning, "Unlike us, they are spending their own money.
These are enormous amounts—already into the trillions." Despite this, he refrained from detailing potential compromises regarding territorial issues, which remain the most complex aspect of the negotiations.
