During a recent plenary session of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation, Ukraine emphasized the urgent need for the international community to impose stronger sanctions on Russia. The Ukrainian delegation outlined that at least 60 components used in each Russian missile are sourced from foreign countries.
Reportedly, these components enter Russia through various sanctions-evasion schemes that must be dismantled to prevent continued military aggression. Furthermore, Ukraine highlighted that the same Iranian-made drones currently utilized by Russia against Ukrainian cities have also begun appearing in other geopolitical hotspots, notably the Middle East, presenting a wider threat to global security.
The declaration stressed the importance of both strengthening sanctions and maintaining robust air defense systems to protect not only Ukraine but also Europe and the Middle East from missile attacks. The delegation argued that if adequate air defense cannot be provided, it is vital to prevent Russia from assembling missiles in their manufacturing plants.
They urged that the recent EU sanctions package, designated as the 20th, be fully supported to curb Russia's military capabilities. They cautioned that any easing of sanctions could lead to an influx of revenue—potentially up to $10 billion—which Russia could allocate towards missile and drone production.
President Volodymyr Zelensky backed the delegation's stance by stating that Russia currently conducts 5 to 6 massive strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure each month, increasingly relying on ballistic weapons in these assaults. The urgency of robust actions presents not only a response to immediate threats but also a strategic effort to safeguard future international stability.
In summary, the call for heightened sanctions is a critical aspect of Ukraine's broader strategy to mitigate the ongoing threat from Russia, emphasizing the interconnectedness of regional and global security. By addressing missile production issues and advocating for sustained sanctions, Ukraine seeks to galvanize international support in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
