Ukraine Launches Food Bank Network to Support Vulnerable Populations

The Ukrainian Ministry of Economy has partnered with the Ukrainian Food Bank Federation (UFDB) to launch a food bank network intended to support vulnerable citizens. The initiative will be shaped by new legislative measures.

The memorandum, signed by UFDB head Dmitro Shkrabatovskyi, addresses the pressing issue of food waste in Ukraine, where an estimated 3 million tons of edible food are discarded annually despite the needs of many citizens.

UFDB is pushing for legislative changes that would create incentives for producers and retailers to donate food nearing expiration. Shkrabatovskyi noted that global food banking practices can play a crucial role in minimizing waste and ensuring essential nutrition for those in need.

The memorandum also includes suggested penalties for discarding food when donation avenues are available. Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotskyi confirmed that these proposals are under review by relevant government departments.

A draft legal framework is slated for review by stakeholders by early April. Vysotskyi highlighted the initiative's relevance to various sectors within the ministry, focusing on economic efficiency, agricultural sustainability, and environmental care.

This effort to curb food waste aligns with Ukraine's overarching goals of improving food security and community support. Vysotskyi aims for 100% resource efficiency, targeting a 50% reduction in food waste as part of a larger strategic plan.
