Ukraine Launches Tattoo Identification Service for War Casualties

The newly launched service, accessible on the 'Single Window for Citizens' portal, features a dedicated section for tattoo recognition within the 'Search' category. This initiative aims to facilitate the identification of missing persons under extraordinary circumstances by publishing sketches of tattoos found on unidentified bodies.

According to Arthur Dobroserdov, the Commissioner for Missing Persons, the service is particularly crucial for families of soldiers and civilians who have disappeared during the ongoing conflict. The portal is designed to allow users to filter their searches by tattoo categories, types, and body locations, making it easier to find potential matches.

Each tattoo sketch on the site includes detailed information such as the sketch number, category, type, and description, making it simpler for families to identify their loved ones. For example, a tattoo might be described as 'a Roman legionnaire helmet on the left shoulder.' This comprehensive catalog will be periodically updated to reflect new data from ongoing recovery and repatriation operations.

Dobroserdov emphasized that families who recognize any tattoos matching those of missing individuals are encouraged to report their findings as quickly as possible. Information can be submitted directly via the hotline number 1698 or through email, where submitters must provide their name, contact details, and any pertinent information about the missing person, including a sketch number and related images.

The success of this service could significantly expedite the process of identifying war casualties, providing closure for families grappling with uncertainty. Techniques developed for reconstructing tattoos may also assist in cases where standard DNA identification is not viable, according to officials.

The launch of this initiative was made possible by the 'Partnership for a Strong Ukraine' program, which has facilitated professional graphic designers' involvement in creating the tattoo sketches. Authorities have called this service a vital tool not only for identification but also for restoring dignity to the remains of individuals who have lost their lives in the conflict.
