During a recent meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Andrii Melnyk, Ukraine's envoy, highlighted Russia's failure to achieve its strategic goals in the ongoing war against Ukraine. Melnyk emphasized that Russia is attempting to derail negotiations by presenting unrealistic demands, which he claims are part of a carefully crafted illusion meant to mislead both domestic and international audiences.

He characterized the current situation as 'a staged performance' where Russia projects an image of strength despite a deteriorating battlefield reality. Melnyk pointed out that Russian claims of invincibility contradict their actual military shortcomings.

According to Melnyk, the Kremlin's negotiating tactics are rooted in what he describes as bluff and deception. He remarked that while Russia publicly insists it is on the cusp of victory, the reality indicates that their military has failed to achieve substantial territorial gains since the start of the conflict.

He quipped that Ukraine is facing 'the longest three-day blitzkrieg in human history,' referring to Russia's protracted struggles to occupy Ukrainian territories. Melnyk noted that at the current rate, it would take Russia over 180 years to conquer all of Ukraine, further underlining the gravity of its military predicament.

Melnyk sharply criticized Russia's demands, claiming they include unreasonable conditions for negotiations, such as requiring Ukraine to forfeit territories that remain unoccupied due to Russian aggression over the past decade. He insisted that such ultimatums ultimately impede any potential peace process.

In a positive note for Ukraine, Melnyk shared that Ukrainian forces have reversed the tide on the battlefield, managing to liberate areas comparable in size to New York's boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn in just February. He emphasized ongoing economic challenges facing Russia, mentioning issues like zero growth, dwindling reserves, and a growing budget deficit that hinder military financing.

Despite ongoing Russian obstructions and tactical delays, Melnyk reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to seeking a comprehensive and lasting peace. He reiterated that Ukraine has never been, nor will it be, an impediment to peace efforts, pledging to work closely with the United States to restore stability in the region.
