On March 14, 2026, Ukraine celebrates Volunteer Day, a significant observance that recognizes the bravery and heroism of individuals who stepped forward to defend the country’s independence and territorial integrity. This day was officially established by the Verkhovna Rada on January 17, 2017.

The date is symbolic; it marks the anniversary of when the first volunteers from the Self-Defense of Maidan left for a training base in Novyi Petrivtsi near Kyiv in 2014 to form volunteer units. During the spring of 2014, thousands of Ukrainians voluntarily enlisted in military service or joined newly formed battalions to counter Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine.

These volunteer formations played a crucial role in supporting the Ukrainian army during the early months of the conflict, as regular forces were still being mobilized. Nearly 40 volunteer battalions participated in battles from 2014 to 2015 in the eastern regions of the country.

Many of these units were later integrated into the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and other security structures, ensuring a more organized defense capability. The recent escalation of violence following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 reignited a surge in the volunteer movement.

In the initial weeks of the conflict, tens of thousands joined the Territorial Defense Forces, demonstrating a renewed commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty. This influx further solidified volunteer contributions as essential support for the defense of the nation.

Additionally, the volunteer effort has included the participation of foreign volunteers. In February 2022, President Ukraine signed a decree to establish the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine, inviting citizens from various countries to join the fight against Russian aggression.

On this day, Ukrainians honor those who have defended the country at different times in its history and remember those who lost their lives in the struggle for independence. The commemoration highlights the enduring spirit of courage and teamwork among both domestic and international volunteers who have joined Ukraine’s defense efforts.
